Projects - Hydropower and Dams

1470MW Run of river Power Plant Luang Prabang - Mekong River Client: Ch Karnchang Lao Company Limited

Scope of Work:

BauCon Int. ZT GmbH was awarded as the EPC Contractors Civil Design Engineer for the 1470MW Luang Prabang run off river Hydro Electric Power Plant. Luang Prabang HEPP is located along the Mekong mainstream approximately 25km upstream of Luang Prabang in Lao PDR.

BauCon Int. ZT GmbH was contracted by the EPC Contractor Ch. Karnchang Lao Ltd. to develop the civil design of the power plant. With a nominal capacity of 1470 MW, the Luang Prabang run-of-river hydropower plant will have an annual output of about 6,500 GWh and will provide renewable energy to the electricity network of the Kingdom of Thailand.

Luang Prabang Power Plant consists of a Main Powerhouse with 7 fish friendly and oil free Kaplan turbines, an Auxiliary Powerhouse with 3 smaller Units, an RCC Dam, Navigation Lock, and Spilling Structures to cope with the high floods of Mekong River. The Project is executed as a BIM project.

Luang Prabang HEPP will form a mile stone in the future navigability of Mekong River. Extensive effort is done to develop and further improve the fish passing concept at an outstanding high ecological quality. Detailed information can be found on the webpage of Mekong River Commission.

Tauernbach Gruben power plant

The Tauernbach-Gruben Hydropower Plant in the Tauern Valley will contribute to improving the power supply security in East Tyrol and to climate protection with a capacity of 29 MW.
It includes a water intake at the Schildalmen with a weir structure, flushing channel, sand trap, and an intake channel. The waterway consists of a 2 km long pressure tunnel and a 6 km long underground steel pressure pipeline with a diameter of 1.80 meters.
At a head of 325 meters, the water is directed into the powerhouse, which is equipped with two horizontal Pelton turbines.
Additionally, a 110 kV underground cable will be installed for the power supply of the plant.
The construction planning of the hydropower plant has been commissioned to Baucon Int. ZT GmbH.

Limberg III Pumped storage power plant of VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH

Underground power plant between the two existing storage lakes as an extension of the Glockner - Kaprun power plant group. The newly constructed structural, mechanical and electrical power plant facilities are arranged in a cavern, gallery and structure system.

As a member of the engineering consortium PSW Limberg III, Baucon has been entrusted with the implementation planning.

Limberg II pumped storage power station Design of reinforcement drawings for the caverns, for the turbines and transformers as well as the generator busbar systems.

The pump storage hydro power plant with an investment sum of 365 million euros has been constructed completely under ground. It was one of the biggest power plant construction sites in Europe.

About 70,000 m³ of excavated material accumulated when excavating the two caverns. The turbine hall cavern is 62 m long, 25 m wide and 43 m high - the size of the nave of St. Stephens Cathedral.

Some component dimensions:
Floor plate thickness up to 1.50 m
Lower generator ceiling: ceiling thickness 2.00 m
Upper generator ceiling: prestressed ceiling 1.50 m thick

Our design was ordered by Pöyry Energy GmbH
